Playbook · GA4 purchase event missing from Shopify checkout
GA4 purchase missing — checkout completed, Analytics still empty.
Written for a Shopify DTC owner whose Google Analytics 4 purchase event should fire after checkout and still never appears in Realtime or DebugView. This page is Measurement ID ownership, native Google & YouTube, Shopify web pixel, and GTM troubleshooting — not the GA4 / Shopify customer events vs a 72-hour ops install comparison, not Meta CAPI Purchase / AddToCart missing, and not the broader add-to-cart / begin-checkout / purchase missing or double-firing multi-pixel playbook. Native Google + Shopify tools first. Honest limits. No earnings claim, no ROAS number, no invented case studies.

01
GA4 purchase missing — not GA4 vs ops, not Meta CAPI, not multi-pixel add-to-cart.
Several products can look like “analytics is broken.” They do not share a settings panel. This page is only GA4 when purchase never shows after Shopify checkout — whether you wired it through native Google & YouTube, a Shopify web pixel, or Google Tag Manager. Choosing whether to buy a GA4 setup job or a 72-hour ops install is GA4 Shopify vs ops install. Meta Events Manager silence on Purchase / AddToCart from CAPI is Meta CAPI events missing. Missing or double-firing across Klaviyo / Google / Meta at once is add-to-cart tracking. This page is only: GA4 purchase silence after checkout.
Six ordinary reasons purchase never lands: wrong Measurement ID or Google & YouTube disconnected, native channel never enabled for purchase, web pixel or GTM not subscribed to checkout_completed, DebugView unused so you are guessing, value / currency missing so reports look empty, or you tested a comparison / Meta CAPI / multi-pixel page instead. Walk them in that order. You already pay for Shopify and Google Analytics. You do not need another “analytics agency” to open DebugView.
02
Wrong Measurement ID, Google & YouTube disconnected, or three owners.
Open Shopify admin → Settings → Customer events / Apps → Google & YouTube (or the Google channel you actually installed). Confirm the GA4 Measurement ID (G-…) matches the property you open in Analytics — a leftover test property or an old ad-linked property looks identical to “purchase missing.” If the channel shows disconnected, reconnect under a Google account that still has access. Do not rebuild the whole analytics stack first.
Ownership: pick one path for purchase. Native Google & YouTube, a custom Shopify web pixel, and a GTM container that also listens for checkout_completed will often fire zero useful purchases (or double them later). Prefer one owner. Remove leftover theme snippets that send a second gtag purchase. Three half-wired owners is the ordinary failure mode, not a mystery attribution bug.
03
Native Google & YouTube / customer events path.
If you use Shopify’s Google & YouTube channel or the Google tag on customer events, confirm purchase / checkout completed is enabled for that property. Enhanced measurement alone does not invent an ecommerce purchase from a thank-you page you never tagged. Save the channel settings. Wait a minute. Then run one controlled checkout — that is the honest next proof, not a new app install.
Shopify checkout is a different surface from the online store. Theme liquid / gtag in the theme will not see thank-you unless you also use a customer event / web pixel / channel that Shopify allows on checkout. If purchase only “works” on a custom thank-you template you no longer use, that is expected silence on Checkout Extensibility — wire the channel or web pixel, do not chase the old theme file.
04
Shopify web pixel or GTM never subscribed to checkout_completed.
Custom web pixels must subscribe to the right Shopify customer events (commonly checkout_completed for purchase). A pixel that only listens to product_added_to_cart will never send purchase. In the pixel code, map checkout_completed → GA4 event name purchase with transaction_id, value, currency, and items when you have them. Publish the pixel. Permissions must include checkout.
GTM path: the Shopify web pixel (or GTM app) must push checkout_completed into the data layer your GTM container actually reads. A GA4 Event tag for purchase that fires on a Page View of /thank-you will miss Checkout Extensibility. Use the custom event / data-layer event your pixel emits, preview in GTM, then confirm in GA4 DebugView. Prefer one container and one purchase tag — not a native channel purchase plus a GTM purchase plus a leftover theme gtag.
05
DebugView / Realtime: prove purchase once with value and currency.
Open GA4 → Admin → DebugView (or Realtime). Enable debug mode on the device you will use (Google Analytics Debugger / debug_mode param / GTM preview as documented for your path). From a phone or incognito session, complete one test purchase. Watch for a single purchase with transaction_id, value, and currency. Zero events means the hit never left Shopify. Two purchases means two owners — remove one.
Also check date range and comparisons in standard reports: looking at yesterday while you tested today, or filtering to a different property, will look like missing purchase. Screenshot DebugView before anyone “fixes attribution” on a send that never left checkout. If the store never reached thank you / order status, purchase will not fire — that is expected silence, not a broken GA4 property.
06
You tested GA4-vs-ops comps, Meta CAPI, or multi-pixel double-fire instead.
Deciding whether GA4 measurement and a 72-hour ops install are the same job is GA4 Shopify vs ops install— not this page. Meta CAPI Purchase / AddToCart missing in Events Manager is Meta CAPI events missing. Missing or double-firing across Klaviyo, Google, and Meta at once is add-to-cart tracking. Those pages do not fix a disconnected Google & YouTube channel or a web pixel that never subscribed to checkout_completed.
The only honest test for this page: correct Measurement ID, one owner (native channel or web pixel or GTM), DebugView open, one completed checkout from a fresh session, a single purchase event with value and currency. Anything else is a different product.

When to stay DIY vs pay $997.
Stay DIY if you can spend one afternoon on the list above: match the Measurement ID, pick one owner, enable native purchase or subscribe the web pixel / GTM to checkout_completed, remove leftover snippets, confirm purchase once in DebugView. That is the whole playbook. No agency required. Short answers also live on the merchant FAQ. Related pages: GA4 Shopify vs ops install, Meta CAPI events missing, add-to-cart tracking.
Pay for help when the work is not the GA4 Measurement ID toggle — it is connecting the stack you already have so lead capture is not dying in DMs, ops exceptions land in a channel you already check, and checkout-ready paths are one live workflow instead of a draft pixel plus a leftover snippet. That is the Latch AI Ops install.
What $997 USD one-time buys: lead capture on the live store, ops alerts in a channel you already check, and a checkout-ready workflow. 72 hours after collaborator access, not after payment. One live Shopify store. Access plus a delivery thread. Store URL collected at checkout. Not a SaaS seat, not a Google Analytics retainer, not an analytics agency rebuild, not a ROAS guarantee, not a brand or theme job.
Other shops’ public ranges, not testimonials: a GA4 / Shopify customer-events cleanup typically runs $500–$2,500. A full ops consulting block typically runs $2,000–$5,000. $997 is the cheap end of that work, sold as a 72-hour install of three systems — not as an earnings number or ROAS claim.
What it does not buy: more orders, recovered revenue, better ROAS, or a case study. Latch AI Ops has not published customer proof because there are no customers yet. You are buying the install.
